In 1980, the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), in collaboration with BusinessWeek Magazine, created the International Design Excellence Awards program (IDEA). This award was established to help foster business and public understanding about the impact of design excellence on the quality of life and the economy. The name was changed from Industrial Design Excellence Awards to International Design Excellence Awards in 2007. Since expanding to an international award, the IDEA award has become one of the most prestigious international awards in the industry.
