:: One of the fundamental processes used in metalworking, sheet metal can be pressure-formed or cut and bent into a variety of different shapes::
We use stamping and forming processes most often in sheet metal fabrication, where parts are fabricated out of rolled sheet metal in presses at high speed and pressure. Other processes such as laser cutting, water-jet, break forming and welding are excellent for prototypes or moderate size production runs, while progressive die stamping is more appropriate for high volume production.
In our design of the Trane air conditioning unit, we used sheet metal as a low-cost solution that required less material than other materials, such as plastic. Sheet metal was ideal for a high volume production unit that required metal stamping.
