Beyond Design + Green Movement

In 2014 we decided to contribute to the efforts of the “going green project” and install solar panels on our Chicago studio roof. It was an exciting time for Beyond Design and we’re proud to be part of the green movement and be environmentally friendly. We’re working to stay on the cutting edge of technology, including how we use energy.

SolarWorld SW275W modules are installed above the main office, and another 18 SolarWorld modules are installed on top of the garage. Both subarrays are supported by DPW racking systems, and an Enphase M250 microinverter is located under each module.

These microinverters convert the DC electricity from the PV modules to AC before it enters the building. The PV system is connected to Beyond Design’s main electrical panel, supplying energy to all local electrical loads as the sun is shining.

The solar array pairs the American made SolarWorld 275 watt modules with Enphase 250 microinverters, both top-tier quality components. Using a Chicago SBIF Grant and Federal Tax Credits, our system was incredibly affordable and should produce energy for at least the next 25 years!

We’re excited to see where this leads us in the green movement. We love that it is relatively maintenance free and that we have access to an online monitor, which reports how the system is performing and alert us if there is a problem. In addition to installing the solar panels, we put in LED lights throughout our studio and have maintained the essence and beauty of our courtyard.

We also have Nests in our studio, adding to our efforts to control our heat and air conditioning usage. It is a priority that when we stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter, we stay aware and responsibly with our energy usage.

We will continue to look for things that we think would support the green movement that we could potentially design for the future in making our planet a safer and more environmentally friendly place to live.
